Bible Question

What does it mean to be born & shapen in iniquity?

Short Answer: Can you please explain being born in this world but shapen in iniquity (Psa. 51:5)

Being born speaks of man’s physical birth while being shapen in iniquity is about spiritual death. Each live physical birth is a stillborn dead birth at the same time because though the baby is alive physically he or she is dead spiritually. Ephesians 2:1-3 says it like this:

“1 And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”

After Adam’s disobedience in the garden, the motions of sin begin to shape every child born (Rom. 5:14-19), and its infectious poison starts affecting immediately (Rom. 7:5). And this initial, natural, physical birth is so tainted, that we have need to be Born Again of water and Spirit (John 3:3, 5, 7; Tit. 3:5). Instead of the wages of sin (death), after the new birth we inherit eternal life (John 3:16-18; 10:10).
