A lot of people have a lot to say, and the basis of their thoughts and actions is usually natural experience, wisdom, and knowledge or human emotion, logic, and opinions. It is critical that all who believe and profess Jesus Christ make sure that what we say and do lines up with the Word of God. Studying makes this possible. Our question should be, What does the Bible say? Our posture should be, Show me in the Book! Our foundation should be what’s written.
The Bible is the scripture, God’s script. When a playwright creates a script, it gives instructions for all involved. It tells each person who they are, what to say, where to be, what to do, and how to do it. God gave us His Word and it is the script! He works according to His script. He will not deviate from His written plan. Look at Jesus! He was committed to the script-ure!
- Jesus’ parents, conception, and birthplace (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:20-23) were consistent with the scripted plan! Herod “gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, [and] he demanded of them where Christ should be born” (Matt. 2:4). They said, “In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,” and proceeded to quote the prophecy (Matt. 2:5-6; Micah 5:2; John 7:42). His birth lined up with the script!
- When the devil tempted Jesus, He did not fall. Every time the temptation came, He said, “It is written” (Matt. 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13) and stood on what the scripture said.
- In Luke 4:16-21, Jesus stood in the synagogue and shared what He was anointed to do by reading Isaiah 61:1-2, and telling them, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” The work that He did over the course of His ministry lined up with what was written.
- Even during his triumphant entry when they took palms, and cried, “Hosanna,” Jesus made sure to find a young ass to sit on, because “it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt” (John 12:14-15; Zech 9:9). It might seem like a small detail to us, but it mattered to Jesus because it was in the script!
- When Jesus was betrayed, He told Peter to put up his sword and even though He could have immediately had thousands of angels present, He didn’t. Why? His mindset was, “But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?” (Matt. 26:47-54).
- The script-ure said in Psalm 69:21, “in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink” so the Bible records, “Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst” and they gave him vinegar (John 19:28-30). Before He said “It is finished,” He made sure to say His “line” and do what the script said, so that before He died, the scripture would be fulfilled!
The scriptures shaped and determined what Jesus said and did. What was written determined His choices, and even gave Him victory in the time of temptation. He knew what was already written and then did everything He could to line up with it. The same must be true for us. Stick with the script! How are you going to stick with it, though, if you haven’t learned your part? Jesus even said, “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God” (Matt. 22:29). We have to STUDY in order to know, understand, apply, and share what is written.
God’s script-ure is written in God’s book. The Old Testament Hebrew letters in the earliest Biblical writings were originally pictographs, and the Hebrew word for Book is Cepher (S:5612). Cepher (Book) is made up of three letters or pictures:
- Samek: originally a picture of a support, like a scaffold. It was something that sustains or holds something up.
- Pey: originally a picture of a mouth.
- Resh: originally a picture of a man’s head.
God views His book as the Support [samek] for the Mouth [pey] of Man [resh]. That is why He gave us His book! If you don’t have “book” for it, don’t say it or expect God to do it! He’ll do what He said which is written in His book. Even when He speaks to us in prayer, it always lines up with what is written. When we speak, we have to make sure we are also committed to saying what can be supported by the book. Otherwise, despite our strong feelings, there is no support from God for what we’re saying.
Our big choices and daily decisions, our words and our perspective, should be based on what is written. It is time to study what God says to make sure whatever we do or say, preach or teach, love or live is supported by the book. If we want to stand, His Word must be our foundation (Matt. 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49). Don’t be swayed by what you see, hear, or feel. Don’t be moved by what you think or want. Study, search, and seek out His Word and then stick with the script!
