Study Tip #1: Pray, Pray, Pray!

We Need God’s Help

When it comes to studying and understanding the Christian word, we don’t get understanding based on our human intelligence, logic, or achievements. Whether you meet in person or choose to study the Bible online,we need God’s help and He is willing to help us comprehend and apply His Word by His spirit when we pray.

The best way to understand a book is by going straight to the author! If someone tells you to do something and you’re not clear on the instructions, what do you do? You go to that person to get a better understanding. Watch this!

Invite God In

In Psalm 25:4-5 we see that David is asking God to show him His ways and teach him His paths. If you want to understand the way of the Lord, ask Him. David’s son Solomon understood this as well. In Proverbs 3:5-6, we see Solomon emphasizing the importance of prayer when it comes to our plans. We are to trust Him, lean not on our own understanding, and acknowledge Him in all of our ways.

Not only should we go to God to understand His Word, but we should also go to Him pertaining to every area of our lives. We have to invite God into our ways and our paths. Why make plans without Him when the Bible tells us that when we pray, not only will He hear us but He will give us the direction that we need! Consistently building these spiritual practices is vital.

Ask God

Psalm 119:105 tells us that the word of God is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path. When we need to know what’s next we have His word. When we are unclear, we do not have to stay confused; ASK GOD!

If you want to know the word—ask God! If you want to know the way—ask God!

Ask for Understanding

Proverbs 4:7 tells us, “With all thy getting, get understanding.” Understanding of God’s word is so important that we should go after it. In Luke 24 Jesus was speaking to His disciples and He opened their understanding so they could understand the scripture. He did not require them to figure it out; He gave them understanding.

Want understanding? Ask for it! Our natural man can’t understand God or His word its own. 1 Corinthians 2:14 lets us know that the things of God are spiritually discerned. Through our soul or psyche we cannot comprehend spiritual things; we have to go back to the One who wrote it and who can open up our understanding. Enrolling in structured online Bible courses can guide you, but God remains the ultimate teacher.

Ask for Wisdom

Proverbs 4:7 also teaches us that wisdom is the principal thing. We don’t always know what to do or how to do it and that is when, rather than leaning on our logic, we seek God’s word and ask Him for wisdom. James 1:5 lets us know that God gives wisdom liberally when we ask. That means He gives it freely! It also says that He upbraideth not. This means that when we ask, He won’t think any less of us because we asked for wisdom.

Study AND Pray

God gives us access to seek Him as we seek to learn and apply His word to our everyday lives. If you want to know God’s way and His path, get the right direction or instruction, and truly understand His word, make sure you take the time to pray! He hears and helps when we do. He is the kind of God who responds to our call. Fostering this habit is one of the most critical spiritual disciplines a believer can develop.

Don’t try to do it on your own or act like you know it all. We have God, the perfect teacher, who made Himself available to us. Use the access He has given and invite Him into your life decisions and your study time. It makes a major difference and you will be glad you did.
