Did you know that there are 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,102 verses in the Bible? Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God’s Word teaches us how to live in a way that pleases Him—in everything! When studying the Bible, it is important to choose a subject or a person that is relevant to you.
Pick a Topic
There are many topics to choose from when deciding what to study. Exploring something new can be exciting, but it could sometimes be more meaningful and beneficial to focus on a topic that relates directly to your life.
Whether it’s a struggle you’re facing, a question on your mind, or a situation you’re experiencing in real time—the Bible addresses it all! We know that God gave us pastors to feed us with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15). Knowing that, it can also be very helpful to study and dig deeper into what your pastor has shared during church services.
The Bible is full of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction—even for the things we might think are too small or unimportant. Nothing in our lives is outside of God’s care or the Bible’s instruction! Need help with your mouth? There’s something for that! Need help handling emotions, forgiveness, or even navigating love? The Bible addresses that too!
Choose a Character
The Bible reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun (Ecc. 1:9), so we can be confident that someone in Scripture has been where you are or faced what you’re facing. You might be surprised at the experiences Jesus went through while on earth—many of them are things we can relate to today. It can also be helpful to remember that these were real people, not just characters imagined by an author.
Explore the stories in Scripture and follow the journeys of those who came before you. Their stories were given “for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4; cp. 1 Cor. 10:11). See how God worked in their lives, and discover how His guidance can help you today as He continues to work in your life too.
Choose something to study that is relevant for you!
