Anybody in need of a good counsellor? As we pray consistently, we find out, there really is no counsellor like Jesus Christ. Isaiah 9:6 tells us, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” A counsellor is an adviser who gives direction. Though godly counsel in line with God’s Word has a place (Psa. 1:1-2; Prov. 15:22; 20:18; 24:6), there is not a SINGLE person who can get close to “Counsellor Jesus.” Here are four reasons.
1. He cares.
It’s great to talk to someone that really cares. His Word tells us, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Pet. 5:7). He wants us to give Him our cares, worries, and anxiety, because of His continual care and great love toward us. He’s a good Father and wants us to trust Him enough to acknowledge Him in all of our ways so we can benefit from Him directing our paths (Prov. 3:5-6). He doesn’t want us to go astray. He gives us the opportunity to come to Him in prayer. He allows us to continually resort unto Him (Psa. 71:3). Why? He cares!
2. He can handle it.
Have you ever had something that was just too heavy for you? When the issues of your heart and mind are way too much, it’s time to run to Jesus. He invited us, saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). He is a counsellor who can handle whatever we bring and we never have to worry about overloading Him. It will NEVER be too big for Him. Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
He wants our burdens off of our shoulders and onto His, because He is strong enough to bear our burdens. He never faints and He never gets weary (Isa. 40:28), He won’t stress or get tired when we talk to Him – He alone can handle it!
3. He is entirely trustworthy.
Jesus is, by far, the most secure source to tell a problem to. Whether we tell a person, write it down, or put it in our technology, there is always a chance a secret will get out. Jesus can be trusted with anything we tell, and He only will repeat it to folks who need to know. Psalm 62:8 puts it like this: “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” We can trust Him at ALL times – in all seasons, with all issues, in every challenge. He is a safe place and the right one to share it all with.
4. His advice is always right.
Sometimes people, even well-intentioned people who love us, give bad advice. They often don’t mean to lead us the wrong way but they simply don’t know everything. They can’t foresee all that will happen, how one thing will impact another, or what tomorrow brings. God is the perfect counsellor because He “inhabiteth eternity” (Isa. 57:15), and He is never wrong (Deut. 32:4). He knows what’s best and He has the power to back up everything He says!
He is beyond rich in wisdom and knowledge, and He’s the ONLY counsellor who has never needed a counsellor (Rom. 11:33-34). Psalm 33:10-11 puts it perfectly: “The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” While others’ words fail, the Lord’s counsel stands for ever.
Proverbs 19:21 says, “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” We can’t depend on the thoughts in our minds, the emotions in our hearts, or the advice of other people; we have to pray, and seek God for His counsel that stands. It’s certainly time to have a private, open, vulnerable conversation with our personal Saviour. When you get alone to commune with Jesus, remember He sees in secret (Matt. 6:6) and cares about the details of your heart. Whatever you’re going through today, take the time to talk to Him. You won’t regret it.
