Fasting: The Right Way & The Wrong Way

There is the right way and the wrong way to fast. In Matthew 6:16-18 the Bible warns us to not be like the hypocrites when we fast: “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

When you fast you should be able to still look happy and it shouldn’t affect the way that you deal with people you cross paths with. We have to be careful when we fast that we not only fast for ourselves, but for others as well. In Zechariah chapter 7, they wasted 70 years of fasting and God refused to respond because they made it all about them. If we want the benefits of fasting, then we must fast the right way, the way written in God’s Word.
