When we study, we can gather all the tips, strategies, and resources in the world—but if we don’t turn them into a consistent habit, we won’t experience the true benefits of applying them. In Acts 17:10-12, the Bereans are commended for searching the Scriptures daily, reminding us that consistency is key. Keep reading for 10 practical ways to help make studying a lasting habit in your life!
#1: Create a Schedule
Prioritize setting aside intentional time to spend in God’s Word. If you know your schedule tends to be busy, consider waking up a little earlier to create space for study. You can also take advantage of small gaps throughout your day—those moments can add up more than you think. Remember, it’s not about how long you study, but how consistently you show up. When you recognize a regular free window in your day, be purposeful about dedicating that time to Him.
#2: Set a Reminder
We’ve all overslept or gotten caught up in the busyness of the day and missed the things that matter most. Thankfully, we can use technology to help us stay on track. Setting a simple reminder on your phone can prompt you to pause and spend time in God’s Word, helping you stay consistent even on your busiest days. You also can post a post-it note in your home or car. Make sure you keep studying top of mind!
#3: Ask For Wisdom
Ask someone who may be in a similar season or someone who has already gotten through that season for wisdom on ways to practically prioritize God’s word. You don’t have to have all the answers on your own but you must have the determination to get in God’s word. Sometimes wise counsel can give you the strategy you specifically need to be consistent with your studying. Don’t try to do it on your own if you’re struggling; ask for help!
#4: Do It First
We already mentioned waking up a little earlier, but if you have the opportunity—make studying the first thing you do. We naturally prioritize the most important tasks at the start of our day, and spending time in God’s Word should be no different. There’s something powerful about beginning your day with Jesus—it sets the tone, brings clarity, and centers your heart before anything else demands your attention. The other benefit is, if your day’s schedule changes, you already will have gotten your time in.
#5: Pair It With Something You KNOW Will Get Done
As a student, you’ll likely find time to get your assignments done. As an employee, you’ll always make it to work. Pair studying with things that have to get done to ensure you do it! For example: You could decide to study before you eat lunch! Include studying in your established routines and it will be harder to miss this time with God.
#6: Eliminate Distractions
When we talk about having a system for studying, it can often include how we use our electronic devices. Whether that means turning off notifications or creating an environment that supports your focus, minimizing distractions is essential.
#7: Don’t Break Your Streak
A streak can be defined as a continuous period of showing up and following through. When you begin to track your consistency, it builds momentum and motivation. The more days you stack together, the less you’ll want to break that rhythm—what starts as discipline quickly turns into something you genuinely look forward to. You can even start tracking your streak today in Just Word Academy or with the Just Word app!
#8: Have A Plan For What You’re Going To Study
Sometimes the most challenging part of studying is getting started because you don’t know what to study! When you choose a topic or have a direction already laid out for you, it can be easier to jump in. Finding something like a study plan to help you navigate your time in the Word can make consistency a lot less intimidating! Don’t just randomly open up your Bible; prayerfully and intentionally approach your time in God’s word.
#9: Get Accountability
It’s much harder to fall off your goals and habits when you know someone is walking alongside you. Having an accountability partner—whether in your home or at church—can provide encouragement, support, and gentle reminders to stay consistent. Checking in with someone not only strengthens your commitment but also makes the journey more meaningful and rewarding.
#10: Remember Your Why
Life will always present obstacles that can threaten to derail our spiritual goals, but remembering why you started in the first place makes it easier to stay committed. When your “why” is clear and close to your heart, it helps you push through challenges and keep moving forward no matter what comes your way. Stay the course and keep moving! Remember, every small step you take builds a stronger foundation for your faith and transforms your daily life.
